OVERVIEW

The Phoenix Urban Heat Leadership Academy will introduce residents to environmental concepts that have historically affected underserved communities. Participants will develop:

  • Awareness of current issues in urban heat, water and air quality
  • A broad awareness and understanding of heat-reducing solutions for grassroots leadership
  • Vocabulary necessary to have an improved understanding of  heat-related issues
  • A better understanding of  how to make change through local political systems
  • Advocacy skills required to communicate community needs
 
DESIRED OUTCOME
The goal of this program is to build the capacity of existing and/or potential community leaders so they can engage with and advocate for cooler and healthier communities through the use of heat-reducing nature-based solutions, as well as to promote awareness of these solutions.
 
FORMAT
The Academy will feature presentations and discussions with community leaders and experts. Training sessions will include opportunities for hands-on learning. Classes will begin in March 2020 and end in July 2020. Participants will meet two Saturdays per month. Refreshments, lunch and materials will be provided. Participants must attend all sessions to be eligible for graduation and receive their “Certificate of Completion.” In addition, individuals who complete the program will be able to apply for a small grant to carry out a community project to reduce heat in their community. The program fee has been waived. Note that there is NO COST to participate.
WHO SHOULD APPLY?


Applicants should:

  • Have an interest in learning about neighborhood improvements, urban heat and advocacy
  • Be a resident of the City of Phoenix
  • Be committed to attending all sessions
  • Be 18 years of age or older

No experience or prior knowledge is required.
