Phoenix Urban Heat Leadership Academy

OVERVIEW

The Phoenix Urban Heat Leadership Academy will introduce residents to environmental concepts that have historically hindered underserved communities. Participants will develop:

  • Awareness of current issues and best practices in the heat related field
  • A broad awareness and understanding of heat reducing solutions for grassroots leadership
  • Vocabulary necessary to have an improved understanding of the heat related issues
  • Understanding of local socio political systems and how they serve public need
  • Advocacy skills required to communicate community needs

DESIRED OUTCOME

The goal of this program is to build the capacity of existing and/or potential community leaders who can engage with and advocate for cooler and connected communities through heat reducing, nature-based, and quality of life-enhancing solutions, as well as to promote awareness of these solutions.

FORMAT

Each class will feature content presentations and discussion with experts in the heat related field. Classes begin March through July 2020 with participants meeting one Saturday a month from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Refreshments, lunch and supplies are provided. Experiences will include hands on learning through field trips. Participants must attend all sessions to be eligible for graduation and receive their “Certificate of Completion” and participant gift. In addition, participating individuals could be eligible for support of a small community project that addresses this issue. THIS PROGRAM IS FREE.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

Qualities in applicants should include:

  • Demonstrated interest in the area of neighborhood improvements
  • An interest in learning about or learning more in the area of heat related issues/topics
  • An interest in learning about advocacy opportunities
  • Must be a resident of the City of Phoenix
